Another interesting chess site is the site of the World Chess Federation, FIDE. You can find a lot of chess news on this site as well as the calendar of FIDE events.
Other interesting parts of this site are the ratings and the FIDE handbook. You can have a look at the ratings of the top players as well as your own rating, as long as you have a FIDE rating. The site also shows your rating progress as well as your game statistics.
Regarding the FIDE handbook: this handbook also contains a section about the laws of chess.

However, the Chess news on the FIDE site is mainly for organizers, arbiters and trainers and not for chess players in general.
